Chelsea Garden 2005

"Urban Glade: The garden recreates a woodland glade in an urban setting. The private space is surrounded by granite filled gabions. Centred around a circular pool, the garden represents a simple and tranquil space, where planting is soft and informal.

Planting is made up of wild or wild-type flowers that are naturally in season at this time of year. The dominent plant, cow parsley, forms a gauzy veil around the pool. A multi-stemmed birch picks up the white colour theme and adds vertical interest to the garden.

Creating a contrast with the softness of the planting, the dynamic gabions are large blocks formed of many small units with irregular texture to add detail to the chunky shape.

A simple bench of stone filled gabions and a granite path complete the scene.
